Skin Needling

Skin needling is a treatment used to stimulate the rapid production of collagen, resulting in smoother, more youthful looking skin. The treatment has had significant success in reducing acne scarring and minimises fine lines while improving the overall texture of your skin.

The procedure involves the use of a series of microscopic needles that are precisely injected into the top layers of the skin. These needles cause numerous minute punctures to the skin to stimulate the fast production of collagen for skin renewal.

The procedure takes approximately one hour to complete with healing taking between 4-7 days. The production of collagen can last for up to 12 months after the procedure. Best results are achieved having three treatments spread over three months.

It causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimising cellular damage. The result is effective remodelling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact. There are three phases to the wound-repair process:
  • Phase I: Inflammation Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
  • Phase II: Proliferation The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
  • Phase III: Remodelling The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

The following are expected following Skin Needling Treatment with experiences varying between patients:
  • low grade redness and swelling for up to 4 days post treatment
  • slight discomfort subsiding within 24 hours
  • bruising
  • mild crusting & scabbing for 2-3 days post treatment
  • short term skin dryness, tightness, itching and burning
  • skin peeling
  • short term darkening of skin pigmentation followed by lightening
Skin Needling procedures are generally deemed minimally invasive with a low risk of adverse events and complications as long as treatment instructions and pre and post skin care advice is followed effectively.
It generally takes up to 3 months with the production of collagen lasting for up to 12 months after the procedure, and multiple treatments may be required to achieve desirable results. This is because beneficial effects associated with this procedure rely upon the wound healing process within the skin which takes time, hence results may take this long to physically appear.
Depending on the individual, some patients may be able to resume normal activities following the procedure with others resuming normal activities the day after. The exception to this is exercise and activities that induce sweating and heat, as they may aggravate the skin post-procedure.

Skin Needling is generally suitable for all skin types, ages & colour. It is always best to discuss the use of any medical therapy with your aesthetically trained medical professional prior to treatment.
